Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Martin Luther King, Jr, who one of the most prominent leaders in the United States' Civil Rights Movement, was born on January 15th, 1929. Since 2000, people in all fifty United States have celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the Monday closest to his birthday. This year, MLK, Jr. Day is being celebrated on Monday, January 19th.

People commemorate the life of this inspirational man annually and it gives us all a chance to take some time to think about civil rights and equality. In the United States, people are encouraged to spend the day volunteering their time to help others.

During class, your job is to watch the two videos. The first video is one made by elementary school students in which several of them perform different parts of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The second is a video recording of MLK, Jr. performing that historic speech. ***Please keep your volume set to a level that only you can hear as your peers will all be wanting to hear their own computers as well.***

Please open at least two windows on your computer - one for the videos and another with this blog.

While you watch the videos, I'd like you to think about the following questions:
-How did Martin Luther King, Jr.'s words make you feel?
-Why did they make you feel this way?
-What did you feel about the students' presentation?
-How can you apply some of his ideas to your own life?

As you are watching the videos or once you've finished watching them, you will reflect on what you watched and how you felt. You will be posting your responses as comments on this message and then reading and responding to the things your peers and I have written.

As most of you know, February is Black History Month (or African Heritage Month). To commemorate that, we will be researching important African-Canadians. As in many aspects of our history, we have much to be proud of and much to reflect on in terms of Black History, Civil Rights and Equality. Stay tuned for more information about things we'll be doing in February!
***Update (3 p.m. Jan 21st): To read some excellent examples, scroll through the comments and focus in on: Youssef H, Zaryab, Fatema, Mariam Me and Hanifa's comments.***

Shauna Pollock said...

James - You said that you found the words to be motivating. What do you feel motivated to do?

I was helping Mariam, with where to post the thing.

I think that it is interesting that you said you find the videos very sad. I get a very different feeling from watching them. Read what James said and see if you agree with that.

The words of Martin Luther King made me feel good inside and make me think that i can do anything i want but i just need to try my best.

Martin Luther King's words were very wise and right. I think that the world should be like this-- "Let Freedom ring!"
The kid's presentations were also very meaningful and it will make people care more about stopping racism. Like Martin, I also like things free and every animal treated equally.

Youssef.H Hi, today i read and watched Martin Luther King Jr speech it was a very good, and inspirational. The speech made me feel this way becouse Martin could have lead the african americans to war with the white people but he was a man of peace and used his voise insted of his fist. I am very happy that thoes students made a video about MLKJR becouse they were inspired by him just like i am. Well if the country leaders were more like Martin then the world would be a peacefull place to live in.

Thank you for posting a response - but please see my comment from 12:03 p.m. about being more specific. The words "nice" and "sad" are far too general.

I really liked the videos because Martian Luther King Jr. words made me feel inspired because the way he was talking and the things he was saying were very strong. I felt that the students looked like the wanted to be like Martian Luther King Jr. and it was veryy nice to see young children being very inspired. I can use some of his ideas to have a way of treating people different than me.

Jamal said...

The reason why i feel this way is beacuse i have good thoughts in my head.

I to agree with Jamal I found that Martin Luther Kings speech was really touching. And the fisrt video was also touching because it was telling how they felt befor when people treated them poorly.

I thought Martin Luther King Jr. had a great heart and always thought positive thoughts he was a great man from my point of view, his speak was very very sad. He had a dream and were following it.

Shauna Pollock said...

Chelsea - his speech is even sadder as we trace the history of MLK Jr's life. In this speech he says he may not be here to see the world change. It turns out he was right as he was murdered shortly after he made the "I Have a Dream" speech. It's pretty chilling.

I wonder how MLK Jr would feel if he were still alive and attending Barack Obama's inauguration as President of the United States tomorrow!

Just amgine G.W.bush like Martin Luther King the war with Iraq woudve been avoidable!!!!!
Just too bad.... too bad O well not everyone is perfect.

Shauna Pollock said...

Alex - I'd like you to go into more detail - what parts made you feel sad? What made you feel encouraged? How can you apply the things that he said to your own life?

Shauna Pollock said...

Philip - That is very interesting. I agree that there should be more leaders in the world who believe in passive resistance like MLK Jr. I think that war is never a good idea. I think there are much better ways to solve conflicts. That is one of the reasons I personally feel inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.

Shauna Pollock said...

Hi Cody - I like that you used the word "empowering". How did you feel empowered? What did his speech make you want to do? Can you imagine if this was the first time you were hearing a black person speak? Would you feel the same way?

Shauna Pollock said...

...continued from above...

Think about how many minds Martin Luther King Jr changed. Many people were very racist and didn't even want to hear someone like him speaking. Suddenly - he is passing on a message of equality and peace. How could you not be moved?

The second video made me think about how different people can change something really big like this huge raiscism that happened in the U.S.A. This video maybe happy because everyone can have a dream and especially Martin Luther King Jr. dream was the one that the whole country wanted to be able to change the law. It also maybe me sad because to think that if he was alive now the whole world might have changed greatly. Also that he might have been the president of the U.S.A and president bush wouldnt have prevoked this whole war in Iraq and that maybe the world would be a little more peaceful

as I said they don't want their children to live the way they lived because they lived in a state that was judged by the color of our skin tones. Last night I heard an interview with Martin Luther King Jr. It is an interview from 1962. The interviewer asks him if he thinks there could be a black president in 40 years. He predicts that there could be one in 25 years. It took a little longer than he guessed - but today - January 20th 2009 - the US is getting a black president!

M-sens-eshal said...

Yo that was harsh it was gross when they used fire hoses on the school kids in the second video

Shauna Pollock said...

Thank you for your comment - Meshal. It certainly is gross and harsh to hear about and to see some of the things that happened to people based only on their skin colour.

Anonymous said...

My Opinion on what he had to say was powerful like what jamal said! I thought that it was powerful because he was trying to tell everyone that they are equal and how it doesn't matter what there colour, race, religion, ect. The reason that I felt that way while watching the videos because I agree! In have the same opinion one his speech! Everyone has the right to be free!!! When I saw that there was children performing this I thought that it was cool! If the kids meant the line they were giving to say then it means that there are a whole lot of people in the world who want freedom, respect, and a right! For applying his ideas to my own life I would be the same! I already feel that everyone diserves to have a right!!! I beleive that everyone is unique and the people who are not like them need to accept that! some people need to stop being so narrow-minded! they need to open up to different things! they need to learn that life is not just black and white, there are more colours out there. meaning that there isn't going to be one type of humans! everyone is different and should be accepted for who they are!!!

They made me feel that segregation never should have happened and I agree with Meshal that the kids who are old as us are being sprayed with fire hose they hurt! I could'nt imagine myself in there places because they are mistreated so much. No ofense in any way but i couldn't realy hear the students presentations and I didn't like it very much but I loved the video about Martin Luther King! i can relate to this in two ways: 1 I would stand up for my rights if I was black in the 1960's and I could also relate that some people discriminate against me for being white( althought not as harshly as white people did against black people in the 1960's and up).

Anonymous said...

hey miss pollock!!! I think what HAPPENED TO THE BLACKS IN U.S.A is hasad which means selfish because the blacks are the same as the whites they are all humans. Why would somebody do that and not only did they separted with the blacks but if they labeled a fountain for blacks and one for whites. The one for the blacks would be ugly, and dirty but the whites fountain would be nice and clean.

Shauna Pollock said...

Auguste - Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I take no offence that you preferred one video to the other. So long as you respectfully comment - you are completely allowed to have your own opinion and express it!

Hey miss pollock ! I thought the speech was heartfelt and the way he wrote the speach he reminds me of Mr.Obama.The video with the kids was very good and I think they understood the concept of black history month.Als I watch a show last night and it was about Mr.King and how he died and they were trying to figure out who killed him And they found out alot of people were involed including the cops and people from the goverment .That in so many ways disgusted me .

Zaryab said...

One thing that I enjoyed looking at was the background and type of camera vision they applied to the project. I was moved by the struggle of students to send a message that if we are together and stand together with hope, belief and a dream you will rise to succession just as the great luther king. So believe in your heart and spread the message of equality!

Hibo & Nader & Zaryab -

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. It is very interesting to hear what each one of you felt about the videos. We all get a similar sort of feeling - one of inspiration - from MLK Jr's speech - but we each bring our own perspectives as well. Each one of us notices something different.

Zaryab said...

I believe martin Luther king is an inspiration for the whole world as Gandhi, Mother Teressa, and Nelson Mandela did. They fought for what was right and as Nader said it was selfish but it was those people who sacrificed all they had to stop this selfishness. They had a vision and hope, they put it together and executed it with laws of peace, love, equality, and the idea of Auguste's, to stand up to tyranny and wrongness. There are times of darkness and segregation that should have never happened as Meshal said. Also wrong vs right, but these are those people who had it in them and these are the people of braveness and will give freedom for their people and lead the way and show the light. For every tyrannic leader there is a courageous man or woman that will stand up to it. These can be everyday challenges, together we stand and fight together and you can be apart of righteousness. I can relate to this with and by saying that I saw someone being sworn at racially and I asked if that is what they had been taught to do or if they have ever looked at the leaders of their area and ever learned from them or other fighters like martin Luther King.

I was touched by the videos because they showed the braveness and they showed who did with passion. They had great effort and tried very hard, I suggest they give more actions and eye contact would make it better. The second video was simply the definition of passion and it described braveness and the stand up against tyranny. Thanks for showing these videos you taught us many lessons Mrs.Pollock.

I can apply some of Martin Luther King's, Jr,ideas in my own life by,
if one day someone asks me how come black and white people get along, I can answer them by telling them about Martin Luther King, Jr. Also,if one day I spot students arguing about black and white people I can always remind them about a man who changed racism forever.
Thankyou for the videos Mrs.Pollock.

Some things that I enjoyed was the costumes and the backgrounds of the student video project. I was fascinated by the words they used like,"without faith everything is impossible, with faith everything is possible."I believe their message was, everything is possible because you make it possible and don't let racism or anything else stop you.

The Martin Luther King, Jr, video was amazing. I loved the way he read his speech, and the fact that millions of people were stunned by his speech is also amazing. While I was listening to the speech, I felt goose-bumps on my arms.He definitely knows how to deliver his words. Luther King is a wonderful man that will always be remembered.

Hey Miss Pollock,
I want to start off with the video of the little students. I thought that they did surprisingly well for such young children and their teacher worked hard toput it all together. I really liked their costumes.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech was very powerful. He is an amazing speaker and really made the words of his speech come to life. It is very rarely that you find someone who speaks with so much passion, his words almost reach into your soul. His speach made me feel mixed emotions because I feel sad that these things happened to people but they also made me feel like there is hope and there are people like him who use their gifts to create a movement, and who know that many people will hate them, they can be harmed but ignore that because they know that they are going to save people and they can change their town, or state, or country or even the world.

I really enjoyed watching the young students' video. I thought it was very well done and I loved all the expression some of the kids put into the parts of the speech!

I also liked the Martin Luther King Jr. recording, his words were really moving. When you watch him finish his speech, and when the audience cheers like that, its something that you just smile at. Hibo said that MLKJR's speech reminded her of Obama's speech in a way; I think it did too. Both people really know how to give a powerful and moving speech.

Racism is still in our world right now, so its nice to have and have had people who really care and want to change that.

I'm going to redo my post for the MLK project:

I thought the kids recital of the declaration of Independance was nice and the children probably worked really hard to make that happen. I think it was amazing that for such small children they could pull of such an amazing performance. My favourite part is when they said: every man, every man , every man deserves to be free or something like that.

I loved the Martin Luther King jr speach. It was uplifting ensightful and he said it with so much passion even though they only said one or two minutes of it! I'm not suprised at all that he was such an influence on segregation and black people and white people alike. I think he was without doubt the most prominent figure and most respected figure in black history and should be remembered as a great man, a better speaker but the greatest influence.

Sincerely,

Auguste

Martin Luther King Jr's words made me feel proud and happy that his words had such an impact on the world that it changed people's minds for the better. And that he made life easier for every African-American, African-Canadian and any African in this world. It made me feel this way because me, myself and plenty of other people are living proof of his words and ideas on equality and life. The student's presentation made me feel like even though the words they are recieting were said years before they were born it still had an effect on them, to remind everyone else on what they learned from those words. I can apply some of his words to my own life by living life to it's fullest and take advantage of the free life he created for me with his words and do something good for people and myself. I can also live a life of equality and treat everyone with respect that I would want them to give me.

The words of Martin Luther King Jr. made me feel inspired. His made me feel this way because of what he said, his words were powerful and they were said with meaning. I felt the students presentation was good and that they learn't alot about him and his powful words.

Hey Miss Pollock

I watched the first video and I thought that it was very moving because it showed how children were affected by racism.

Hey Miss Pollock

After I watched the second video I felt real sad on how black school children were treated. Like they couldn't go to school with out getting harrasted.

I think the videos were very touching and really interesting because now days children are not that interested in history and racism because now days its mostly children and teens that are racist to others so it was really nice to see that Martin Luther King Jr. has made a very big diffrence all around the world.

This video was very touching because his words were very powerful and caused many people to act. The kids were also very good and I thought that was a nice little project they set up that probably took lots of time and effort.

Martin Luther King Jr., like Barak Obama definitly has a way with words. They both inspire people with their great and powerful speeches. Martin's speech made me a if I could do anything that I really try to do. I couldnt't believe how badly black people were treated.
