Amazing Students!

You guys rock!

Check out what Santana has done. She found an awesome website that tells you what important historical events occurred every day of a year. She's also added a gadget on her blog that updates daily with that same information. Awesome! Also, how can you not adore her blog title - "Love This History"?

Sarah has found a super, duper neat-o widget. You can create a quiz (similar to those 10 question quizzes on BrainPop) and embed it on your site. I strongly suggest that you do her quiz. Embarrassingly, I only got an 8/10. See if you can beat my score!

Let me know, in my comments, if you've discovered something super amazing!

African-Canadian Profiles Competition Update

Hello gang,

Scroll all the way to the bottom of this screen and you'll see a list of the top African-Canadian profiles that have been written so far. Next week, the top 20 will begin reading their assignments on the morning announcements. As new postings are added, I will continue to update the list. Stay tuned and check often!

What If I'm Done All My Assignments?

Hello friends,

Some of you have been rocking through all your assignments - keep it up!

There are a few students who rush through assignments in a hurry and forget to follow some important instructions. Please make sure that you read over the requirements carefully. I take the time to write everything out and you all know how to read. Make sure you follow the instructions fully.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - PUH-LEEZE SPEIL CHEKK!

I keep hearing the same question over and over, "What should I do when I'm done all my assignments?" Here is a list of suggestions so I can save my lovely voice for singing Sam, Haron and Mariam Me's theme songs.

If you are done all your assignments:
-Make sure that all assignments have been edited and spell checked
-Make sure you've properly followed all instructions for every assignment
-You can add relevant images or photos to your assignments
-You can add surveys or polls to your blog
-Read over my blog posts for advice and exciting information
-Read and respond to comments you have recieved on your blog
-Read over your peers' blog posts to see what they're up to
-Comment on my blog to ask questions or point me to something really interesting you've done
-Comment on your peers' blogs, noticing things they've done well, and things they can continue to work on
-When you visit other people's blogs, comment to tell them you've been there and what you think of what they're doing. That will encourage them to check out your blog as well

Helena Gives Some Advice, Which Reminds Me...

Hey ladies and germs!

Helena in E7/8 never ceases to amaze me! She has posted an amazing entry giving advice to you, her peers, on how to write even better blog entries. She has outlined the process that she uses in her own writing. This is something helpful for all of you to read.

It's so interesting for me to see the process that you use when you do your work. Remember that you can use your blogs for any History related things. Some of you have embraced this and have written reflective entries, made polls or contests, and commented on things that are going on in Canada today. That is perfect. In addition to the marks that you will get for completing your assignments, you can get bonus marks for using your blogs creatively to share relevant information. Some of you have done creative things, like add video bars, music, personalized templates, etc. That is a good way to personalize your blog, but is not relevant, so will not get you bonus marks.

To get bonus marks, be CREATIVE and RELEVANT. I look forward to seeing all the cool things you come up with. If there is something you want me to check out, simply leave a comment for me.

Assignment #6: Black History Month

Hello habibtis,

February, as most of you know, is Black History Month. One of the things we'll be doing at Fielding to commemorate this month-long celebration is daily announcements after O'Canada. I teach about 110 History students. There are about 20 school days in February. Out of my 110 students, about 20 will win. This assignment is also a competition.

Your job is to:
-Select an influential African-Canadian
-Read about them from at least two sources
-Link to those two sources
-In your own words, write a New Post describing who that person is/was and what important contributions they made to Canadian society and the world
-Your entry should be about two paragraphs long, or take about 1 minute to read aloud (just for your information, when screenwriters or TV writers write a script, one computer page of script takes about one minute to perform)
-Winning: The writers of the top entries will have the priviledge to either read their entries over the morning announcements in February or select a friend to read it for them

Tech Experts and Blogger Templates - Important Information

Hello puppies,

I see that many of you have taken Stan's advice and used funky templates. Once you've applied your new template, you will have to re-add any gadgets or widgets you added to your old template (blogger will warn you of this when you download your new template). If you don't know how to do that, talk to one of our Tech Experts: Stan, Jordie, Colton, Sara, Jaspreet, or Philip and they can help you. I will continue to add to a list of Tech Experts on the right hand side of my blog as students get better and better. If you want to be added as a Tech Expert and help out your schoolmates, just comment on this message! You can always leave questions for me in the comment field on posts, or you can visit the Tech Experts blogs (or talk to them at school).

Also, once you have a new template, ask a friend to come to your blog and try to leave a comment. If they cannot, go into your Settings and make sure that the Comment option is activated.

E7B - Some Shout Outs

Way to go, E7B!

Thank you to the wonderful helpers in this magnificent class! I see that Aynalem is helping Mariam K because the two of them had the same problem with people leaving comments. I see that Genny and Michelle are helping one another. Chelsea is helping Ridge set up his account. James has provided support to many of his classmates. Youssef H is helping Mohamed.

I'm so proud of you little monkeys!

Some Ways to Make Your Assignments EVEN Better

Hello friends -

I've been reading over your wonderful assignments and for the most part, I'm totally impressed. You are putting a lot of thought into the things that you are writing. You are making wonderful observations and making connections.

I have noticed a couple of things that most of you can do to make your posts even better for your readers. Remember that your readers can arrive at your site from anywhere on the Internet. Your peers and I will obviously be reading your blogs, but other people can find them as well. If someone who is not taking this course discovers your blog, you want to make sure that they can understand what you are talking about.

Remember to introduce your assignments when you make a post. If you suddenly start writing about the cold with no introduction, readers will be confused. Another way that you can make things even clearer for your readers is to introduce the assignment and link back to my blog with the assignment on it.

If you do those few simple things, your posts can become even more effective.

Keep up the tremendous work.

PS - Pleaze spel cheque.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Martin Luther King, Jr, who one of the most prominent leaders in the United States' Civil Rights Movement, was born on January 15th, 1929. Since 2000, people in all fifty United States have celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the Monday closest to his birthday. This year, MLK, Jr. Day is being celebrated on Monday, January 19th.

People commemorate the life of this inspirational man annually and it gives us all a chance to take some time to think about civil rights and equality. In the United States, people are encouraged to spend the day volunteering their time to help others.

During class, your job is to watch the two videos. The first video is one made by elementary school students in which several of them perform different parts of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The second is a video recording of MLK, Jr. performing that historic speech. ***Please keep your volume set to a level that only you can hear as your peers will all be wanting to hear their own computers as well.***

Please open at least two windows on your computer - one for the videos and another with this blog.

While you watch the videos, I'd like you to think about the following questions:
-How did Martin Luther King, Jr.'s words make you feel?
-Why did they make you feel this way?
-What did you feel about the students' presentation?
-How can you apply some of his ideas to your own life?

As you are watching the videos or once you've finished watching them, you will reflect on what you watched and how you felt. You will be posting your responses as comments on this message and then reading and responding to the things your peers and I have written.

As most of you know, February is Black History Month (or African Heritage Month). To commemorate that, we will be researching important African-Canadians. As in many aspects of our history, we have much to be proud of and much to reflect on in terms of Black History, Civil Rights and Equality. Stay tuned for more information about things we'll be doing in February!
***Update (3 p.m. Jan 21st): To read some excellent examples, scroll through the comments and focus in on: Youssef H, Zaryab, Fatema, Mariam Me and Hanifa's comments.***

Some Praise for Blogging

I hope you all had a good weekend, and are looking forward to heading back to school on Monday!

I was happy to hear from two colleagues this weekend. They checked out your blogs and were very impressed with your work.

Mr. Summers, who is the Secondary Information Technology Consultant with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (our school board) wrote to me and said, "My hat is off to you and your students... a great way to engage the kids. I am right now reading a book that took place in 1909, so the question about 100 years from now really hits home to me... so hard to imagine."
Last week, I was not at school on Monday morning because I was attending a workshop and I was happy to run into one of my favourite former teachers. Heather Mace taught me at the University of Ottawa. She is currently the Vice Principal at Featherston Elementary School. She had a look at our blogs and said, "Nice work on the Blog... it's clearly current, and gives a reason for the students to access it. I also liked how the student's own blogs were at the side, and in checking them out, you'd given them structure to check out each other's blogs (my biggest concern with online stuff is to have learners interacting with each other)."

Lots of you have also expressed your own excitement about this new blogging project, and you continue to impress me with the wonderful things you are producing!

Keep on blogging and rolling!

Helena in E7/8 is Getting into the Game!

Hey folks,

I've been checking out all your blogs and seeing some incredible things.  I'd like to direct your attention to Helena's blog to get some great ideas.  Helena is hard at work on the assignments, but she is also using her blog for other things.  When she makes observations about Canadian History, she (appropriately) comments about them on her blog and links readers to other relevant things she has found.

She has also started some surveys and polls on her site, you should check out her blog for some good ideas.

***Update: Helena has now added a contest to her blog.  She is a great artist and is offering original pieces of her art as prizes for the top three entries.  Go on over there and check out the requirements for her contest!***

I am so proud of students' innovation and resourcefulness with this new method of learning.  Keep on impressing me, bloggers!

James in E7B Can Help!

Hello Fielding Bloggers,

If you are interested, James in E7B, is a blogging pro and can help you to make custom templates.  If you're interested, check out his blog and leave a comment, or talk to him at school!

***Update: James is continuing to work on blog templates and is eager to help other students out.  If you would like a certain topic for your blog, or would like him to make you one from scratch, he's offered up his help.  Check out his blog if you could use his help!***

I love that students are helping one another out with this!

Keep up the WONDERFUL work, everyone!

Assignment #5: It's Really Cold

OK, so it's REALLY cold. And I mean REALLY REALLY cold. So cold that you go outside and your tears freeze. In fact, there is a frostbite warning. Supposedly, any exposed skin can get frostbitten in 10 minutes.

The cold got me thinking as I was leaving school yesterday. Mr. Mitchell and I were complaining about how long it was taking our cars to heat up so that we could drive home. Suddenly, I thought of those first Canadian settlers who came here from Europe. What on earth would have made them STAY here after they experienced one winter? I understand that they might have thought they found a nice place if they arrived in the summer, but even one bitter cold day and they must have thought they made a mistake. Granted, the first settlers came here close to 500 years ago, and the climate has changed some, but it still must have been REALLY cold for them.

Imagine that you had no heated buildings to go into. Imagine you didn't have warm and cozy boots, hats, jackets and mittens. You would want to start a fire to keep you warm, or at least to keep you alive. Imagine you had to dig in the snow and ice to find wood to start a fire. Imagine that the wood was so frozen it wouldn't light.

I walked from my garage to the door of my house yesterday - maybe 15 steps and my hands were numb from the cold. All I had to do was unlock my door and it took me 20 minutes to thaw out.

Your assignment is to do some research on early Canadians and make some inferences about how they survived and thrived in the long, cold Canadian winters. Reflect on what life was like where they came from that this was a BETTER life. It's a good thing they did tough it out, because they set this land up for us to be comfortable (most of the time) even on the coldest of days.

Here is some information to check out to help you with this assignment:
-The Kids' Site on Canadian Settlement talks about daily life for French and other settlers (including the Acadians and the Inuits
-The Canada Page talks a little about early settlers across the country
-Immigrating to Canada discusses some of the reasons people immigrated to Canada and left their homes
-The Canadian Encyclopedia talks a little about early Canadian homes
-The Pioneer Homestead has some general information about setting up a pioneer homestead

In order to make your entry more personal, talk to your family about when they first came to Canada. What were the things that pushed them from their home? What were the things that pulled them here? why did they decide to stay after they'd seen what weather they'd have to endure?

This assignment has several parts:
-Start a new post
-Research how early Canadians survived (use some of the links from above AND do some research on your own)
-Discuss some of the challenges early Canadians had to face due to the cold of winter (think about the things people need in order to survive and consider whether it was more difficult to get these things in winter)
-Write about how early Canadians learned to deal with the extreme cold
-Find out and write about how and why your family came to Canada
-Find out and write about how your family learned to deal with the extreme cold
-In your entry, include links to sites where you found your information, and quote at least two of the pieces of information you learned
***Update: (1:30 p.m. Jan 29th) - Check out Ryleigh's blog for an excellent example for this assignment!***

Ch-ch-check it out!

Please check on the right hand side of this page --->
and make sure that I have linked to your blog.  If I have not, please leave a comment on this post and tell me.  I can then link to you and your classmates can read your blogs.

Welcome, E7B!

My fourth and final History class, E7B, has joined us in the Canadian History blogosphere! Welcome! We're all here and ready to party! Wahoo!

Stan Gives Some Advice

Hey gang,

Lots of you have been doing wonderful things with your blogs.  Stan in E7A has given some instructions on how to change your blogger template to something that you feel represents you.

I'm so impressed with the initiative that some of you are taking in making these blogs your own and taking pride in your work!

  We're only just getting started!

Assignment #4: Linking Back to Your Peers

Hello bloggers!

You have spent time checking out your peers' blogs. You have commented on AT LEAST three entries that your classmates made answering Assignment #3's question: What will Canada look like in 2109?

I am excited to read what you thought of your peer's work.

Your next job is to write an entry telling everyone how you felt about your peer's Assignment #3 entries. In this entry you must quote your classmates (copy a phrase from their text and place it in "quotation marks") and link to the entry you are discussing. Remember to be respectful and say positive things. If you think something could be better, present that in a constructive way.

**For an example of what to do, check out Ally's post**
***Update (11:45 a.m. January 26th) - Grace did a lovely job on this assignment, have a look at her blog if you need a sample. James did an absolutely incredible job on this assignment, he followed all directions and went above and beyond in terms of the detail that he used. So far, James' Assignment #4 is one of the best blog entries of all of my students. Well done, James! Please look at his entry and use it as an exemplar (ideal example) for your own work.***

Welcome E8C and E7A!

E8C just had their first class of blogging today. Unfortunately some took a long while to get started as the scrambled words on the log in page were tripping them up. By the end of class all but one student had made a blog! Well done!
E7A began blogging yesterday and are eager to get back into the lab to explore even more!

For all students who use this blog remember:
-Never use your last name
-Your due dates are listed along the bar over here ---> (listed by class)
-Make sure to comment on my blog entries if you have any questions
-Make sure to comment on your peers' blog entries to start a conversation
-Pop by my classroom at school if you need some one-on-one help or if you would like to stick around and use our awesome computer lab after school
-Come and see me to learn how to follow a blog. It is important that you follow this one so that you are notified when new information is added
-Go ahead and blog whenever you want about Canadian History. If you want to blog about unrelated or personal things - start a new blog for that!

Keep on blogging in the free world! You guys are doing beautifully so far!

Some Great Ideas from Your Peers

I'm happy to see that some of you have been playing with blogger and figuring out different things that you can do.  Many of you have personalized your blogs by adding profile pictures and changing some of the colours in your template.  Things are looking great.

To see some excellent sample of student works, check out Jessi's entry: Canada in 2109!,  Sabrina's entry: Assignment #3 and Chongo's entry, Assignment #3: History of the Future.  They both read and responded to Christopher Moore's blog entry and came up with some very interesting ideas about what Canada will be like in 2109.  To get some ideas about how to set up your post, you should check out theirs.

I can't wait to see what the rest of you have to say.  Make sure to think of some creative ideas about where our country is headed, and express them clearly and with detail.

We're Pretty Famous

Hey bloggers,

Christopher Moore came and checked out this blog and said he'll be following your responses to Assignment #3 - "History of the Future" closely!  This is even more reason to be conscientious about the things that you are writing.  Now that we're out in the blogosphere, all kinds of different people can find us and hear about what we have to say.  As great entries predicting the history of Canada in 2109 begin to get posted, I'll quote you, and link to your blogs here.

Some of you have commented on my entries and asked questions - PERFECT!  You are using this media perfectly.  I am so happy to see you using your new knowledge effectively.

I look forward to reading your thoughtful and engaging responses in Assignment #3.

***Don't forget to link back to Christopher Moore's blog post that you are responding to.***
***Don't forget to spellcheck your entries.***

Assignment #3 1/2

Hello darlings,

Please take a look at three classmates blogs (at least) and read their posts for Assignment #3.  Please leave constructive comments.  Tell the writer some things that you liked about their posting and give them some suggestions for next time.  This is similar to the way you make comments in class, "I liked it when..., Next time..."

Make sure that you have done the following:
-allow comments from anonymous posters (from your blog, click on "Customize" go to the Settings tab-->select Comments--> and change "Who can comment" to Anyone - allow anonymous posters")
-set up your preferences for comment moderation (Settings-->Comments--> and set your moderation preference as you wish, to either Always, Never or Only on posts older than 14 days)
-select "No" for "Show word verification for comments" (Settings-->Comments-->Show word verification...)
-follow this blog (Customize-->Dashboard-->Reading List: ADD-->type in my blog address http://www.historypollock.blogspot.com), you can also link to your classmates' blogs in the same way

Reminders:
-no chat language ("how r u?", "lol", "rofl", "jk"), please punctuate correctly, use correct grammar, spellcheck and proof read your work
-this is your professional, educational blog - write things that you can take pride in!

***If you need guidance about how to do any of these things, come and see me or one of the wonderful students who has already completed this work (E7/8 are quickly becoming tech experts)!***

Assignment #3: History of the Future

In searching for cool stuff for you folks to read, I found a blog maintained by a historian named Christopher Moore. You should check it out. He wishes "there were enough worthwhile Canadian history blogs to make .....(a) list". Perhaps some of your blogs will be just that!

I especially like an entry titled "To the Nines -- reviewing the centuries". I would like you to check it out and read it so you can hear one perspective on how far our wonderful country has come in the past 500 years. He discusses what Canada has looked like and felt like both from a newcomers' point of view, as well as from Natives' point of view. It's a pretty interesting way of looking at things, making sure to see history through different sets of eyes.

Your assignment is to read the entry discussed above and respond to the author's final sentence. He wonders what Canada will look like in one hundred years. Please write a blog entry (on your own blog) speculating on what may be happening in Canada in 2109. It may be tempting to just talk about things like flying cars, but please try to think long and hard about this. Reflect on some of the things that have happened in the last five hundred years and what will change in our country in terms of politics, the environment, population and big historical events. Think about how exciting it is in the United States that there is an incoming black president. What sort of exciting things will happen in the next hundred years here?

***Make sure in your blog entry to introduce what it is you're talking about and to link back to Christopher Moore's blog ***

***Update: (3:30 p.m. Jan 21st) Samantha in E7A has made some great observations and predictions about where we are headed. She predicts another female Prime Minister and a first black Prime Minister. She also predicts more schooling will take place in the blogosphere.
Some other students have predicted very interesting things like an Aboriginal Canadian Prime Minister, population laws similar to those in China, alternative sources of fuel, desolate conditions around the world due to global warming.
You have so many interesting ideas! Keep on sharing them with one another!***
.
***Update (12 p.m. January 26th) - Janet has made a very good entry that you can look at as an example. She writes very clearly and even uses bullet points to make her writing easy to read. Her ideas are very optimistic and positive. ***
.
***Update (9:05 a.m. January 27th) - Alem has done an exceptional job with this assignment. She has listed many predictions and is very specific. Well done!***

Be creative, be specific.

It's time to write about the history of the future!

How to post a comment: This is actually the first thing we'll do as a class

You will comment on the Welcome entry on this blog so that you can see how easy it is to make comments.  Because we will be doing this right now, together, live in class, this is called "Live Blogging".

To comment, you simply select the "comment" button at the end of a blog post, then enter your comment and necessary information.  Please post comments by using your blogger username and link back to your own blog.

Assignment #2: Comment on three blogs

This assignment will be due by the beginning of our next class.

Your first homework assignment is to find the blogs of three of your classmates (I will post links to these on my blog on the right hand side) and make comments on their first entry. That means that you are reading their entries and responding appropriately and thoughtfully to the things that they said. You are not telling your friends how awesome their new shoes are, or about a person you have a crush on. This is your professional educational blog and you are expecting people to be respectful of that and you must, in turn, be respectful of your classmates.

Good luck!

Assignment #1

  Here we go!

Now that you have your own blogs set up, the first entry I would like you to make is one welcoming people to your blog.

***Update:  For an example of how to do this, check out Alem's Welcome entry - she has done it perfectly!***

We will all do this first assignment together, so don't stress - you'll see how fun and easy this is!

Please open a New Post and write about the following (don't forget to spellcheck and proof read!):
-Welcome readers to your blog, tell them that you are a grade 7/8 student in Ottawa, Canada and that you will be learning and writing about Canadian History here on your blog and you hope that your readers will enjoy themselves and feel free to respond
-tell your readers how you feel about the fact that you'll be doing the remainder of your History course online (are you excited, nervous...why?)
-create a link to your teacher's blog (this one you're reading right now)

This should be a relatively short entry.   Remember that you can always come back on and edit or make a new post.  The point is, for this assignment, I just want you to introduce what's going on.

Welcome!

Hello students of E7/8, E7A, E7B and E8C (and anyone else who happens to stumble on this blog)!

Welcome to Canadian History with Miss Pollock. Because our textbooks can get a little dull at times and because it's always great to have an opportunity to integrate technology into the classroom, you are a part of a pilot project in which you will be completing the remainder of your Canadian History course online! We will all be learning as we go, including me, your teacher. We'll try out some interesting things and I want you all to be open to new ideas as well as sharing your input on how things are going.

We will work together to develop your blogs over the remainder of the year. You will work on your blogs both in and out of class. Don't forget that you're welcome to make an appointment with me after school or during recesses so that I can give you some one-on-one guidance or you can have extra time to work in our computer lab.

To remind you what exactly a blog is, click on the highlighted word.

I am so excited about this project and I hope you are too!

Let's get rocking and rolling!

Miss P
Here is how you link to this page.
